But all that technology comes with a price.
As R230 cars age, some components become particularly prone to cracking, breaking or simply deteriorating. Many of these are not major mechanical components – they are the small plastic, trim and mechanism parts that were never designed to last forever.

Vario Roof Mechanism Flaps
The Vario roof is one of the most impressive features of the R230, but it is also one of the areas where age can eventually become noticeable.
The roof mechanism contains several plastic covers and flaps that are repeatedly exposed to movement, vibration and changing temperatures. After many years, the original plastic can become brittle and cracks can develop around the mounting points.
A damaged roof flap may not affect the basic operation of the roof immediately, but broken or missing plastic can leave the mechanism looking unfinished and can allow surrounding components to move more than they should.
The condition of these parts is therefore worth checking whenever the roof mechanism is being inspected or serviced. Small cracks can become larger once the brittle plastic is subjected to further movement.
Replacing only the damaged flap can be a much simpler solution than replacing a larger section of the roof mechanism. The correct side and interior colour should be checked before ordering.

The R230 Vario roof depends on a hydraulic system to operate and lock the roof correctly. As these cars age, the seals inside the hydraulic cylinders can eventually deteriorate.
A worn seal can allow hydraulic fluid to escape and may lead to symptoms such as a slow roof operation, incomplete roof movement or problems with the locking mechanism.
Hydraulic leaks are not always easy to spot immediately. A small loss of fluid may develop gradually, so unusual roof behaviour should not be ignored simply because there is no obvious puddle underneath the car.
When a hydraulic cylinder is suspected, the complete system should be inspected before replacing parts. The pump, lines, cylinders and fluid level can all have an influence on how the roof operates.
If the problem is caused by worn seals inside the top lock cylinder, replacing the seals can be a more targeted repair than replacing the complete hydraulic cylinder.

Door Interior Handles
The interior door handles on the R230 are used every time the car is entered or exited, making them one of the interior components that receives a considerable amount of use.
After years of use, the original handle can become worn or damaged. The surrounding materials can also deteriorate as a result of repeated contact, temperature changes and general ageing of the interior.
A damaged handle is not normally a reason to replace the entire door panel. If the rest of the panel is in good condition, replacing the individual handle can be a much more practical approach.
Before ordering a replacement, it is important to check whether the car is left-hand drive or right-hand drive and to match the interior colour.
This is particularly important on the R230 because Mercedes offered the interior in several different colour combinations.

Door Mirror Covers
The exterior mirror covers are constantly exposed to sunlight, temperature changes, weather and the occasional contact that can occur when parking.
After years of use, the original cover can become damaged, cracked or simply deteriorate. Because the mirror is located on the outside of the car, even relatively small damage can be clearly visible.
It is important to distinguish damage to the cover from a problem with the complete mirror assembly. If the mirror adjustment, folding mechanism and other functions are still working correctly, replacing the entire mirror may not be necessary.
The condition of the mounting points should also be checked before fitting a replacement cover. Damage around the mounting areas can indicate that the mirror has previously suffered an impact.
