Five Parts to Watch Closely
The Mercedes-Benz R230 is now old enough for many of its smaller components to show clear signs of age. While the major mechanical systems often receive most of the attention, interior trim, controls, covers and mounting components can be just as important when keeping an R230 in proper condition.
Some failures are purely cosmetic. Others can make a particular function difficult to use or leave an otherwise well-maintained SL looking incomplete.

Parktronic Display Clock Module Cover
The central display area in the R230 combines several functions in one compact unit, including the clock and Parktronic information on equipped vehicles. Its surrounding cover is an interior component that is exposed to sunlight, temperature changes and everyday contact.
After many years, the original trim can become worn, damaged or develop cracks. Scratches and deterioration are particularly noticeable because the component sits directly in the driver’s field of view.
When the electronics themselves are working correctly, damage to the surrounding trim does not necessarily justify replacing the complete module. The condition of the display and electronics should be checked separately from the condition of the cover.
Replacing the trim allows the original functional components to remain in place while restoring the appearance of the dashboard.

Rear Storage Compartment Lid
The storage compartments behind the seats are useful parts of the R230 interior, but their covers can suffer from years of repeated opening and closing.
The original lid and its mounting points are subjected to mechanical stress every time the compartment is accessed. With age, plastic components can become less resistant to flexing, while repeated use can eventually lead to damage around the hinges or mounting areas.
A broken storage lid can also affect the overall appearance of the interior. On a well-preserved R230, missing or damaged storage-compartment trim is immediately noticeable.
Before replacing the complete compartment, inspect the lid, hinges and surrounding mounting points. If the structure underneath is still sound, replacing the lid itself can be the appropriate repair.

Front Lumbar Control Switch
The R230’s electrically adjustable seats contain several small controls that can become worn or damaged through regular use.
The lumbar adjustment control is particularly exposed because it is operated directly by the driver or passenger. After years of use, the original plastic control can become worn, cracked or damaged.
A broken control does not automatically mean that the complete seat adjustment system has failed. The electrical system and adjustment mechanism should be tested first to determine whether the fault is limited to the external control.
If the seat functions correctly but the control itself is damaged, replacing the individual component is a much more targeted repair.

Hand Brake Release Handle
The hand brake release handle is another small component that can easily be overlooked during an R230 restoration.
Unlike many purely decorative trim pieces, this handle is operated regularly and is subject to repeated pulling force. Over time, the original plastic can become worn, damaged or lose its original appearance.
If the parking brake itself is functioning correctly but the release handle is damaged, there is no reason to assume that the complete mechanism needs replacement.
The important part is to identify the correct version before ordering. The R230 uses different references depending on whether the vehicle is LHD or RHD.

Headlight Washer Cover Bracket
The headlight washer system is another area where small exterior components can become damaged over time.
The covers and their supporting brackets are exposed to road debris, weather, washing and minor impacts. Because they are located at the front of the vehicle, even a small damaged component can affect the appearance of the bumper.
It is important to distinguish between a damaged cover or bracket and a problem with the complete headlight washer system. If the washer mechanism itself is operating correctly, replacing the damaged mounting component may be all that is required.
When inspecting the area, check the mounting points carefully. A loose or incorrectly positioned cover can indicate that the bracket underneath has been damaged.

A: Do not focus only on the engine and gearbox. Inspect the Vario roof, hydraulic system, interior trim, electrical equipment, seat controls, storage compartments and exterior mounting components. Small neglected defects can reveal how the car has been maintained.
Q: How can I tell whether an R230 problem is mechanical or only cosmetic?
A: Test the function of the system first. If the mechanism, electronics or adjustment system works correctly while only the surrounding plastic or trim is damaged, replacing the individual component may be sufficient.
Q: Why are small R230 plastic components prone to failure?
A: Age, repeated mechanical movement, UV exposure, temperature changes and vibration can gradually reduce the strength of plastic components. After more than two decades, even parts that were originally perfectly adequate can become brittle.
Q: Why is the LHD/RHD version important when ordering R230 parts?
A: Some components are different depending on the steering configuration. For example, the hand brake release handle is listed with separate LHD and RHD OEM references, so the vehicle specification should be confirmed before ordering.
